Flood Insurance
What Flood Insurance Does Not Cover
Understand common flood insurance limitations before you rely on your policy.
Understanding Flood Insurance Exclusions
Flood insurance provides valuable financial protection, but like all insurance policies, it has limitations. Understanding what your policy typically does not cover can help you avoid surprises after a flood.
While coverage varies by policy, flood insurance generally does not cover:
- Temporary living expenses if you must leave your home after a flood.
- Damage caused by mold or mildew that could have been prevented.
- Landscaping, trees, shrubs, patios, decks, fences, or swimming pools.
- Currency, valuable papers, and certain precious items beyond policy limits.
- Vehicles, which are typically covered under auto insurance with comprehensive coverage.
- Financial losses caused by business interruption unless specifically insured.
Building coverage and personal property coverage are separate. Purchasing one does not automatically include the other.
Coverage varies between NFIP and private flood insurance companies, so it is important to review your policy.
